Upper Lehman Creek Campground

Upper Lehman Creek is a 23-site developed campground in a forested creekside setting at about 7,500 feet, roughly 3 to 3.5 miles up Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive from Lehman Caves Visitor Center. It works well as an overnight base for the cave tour and the high-country trailheads farther up the road. All 23 sites are reservable through Recreation.gov.

Pinyon and ponderosa pines, juniper, fir, aspens and mountain mahogany shade the sites, with Lehman Creek running through the campground. A viewing platform looks over the stream; cutthroat trout live here, though the small, brushy water is difficult to fish. Visitors often value the quiet and tree cover, but some parking pads are sloped or uneven, which can make leveling a trailer or van awkward.

There is no potable water, electricity, shower or camp store at the campground, so arrive with drinking water. Sites have picnic tables and metal fire rings with grills; seasonal vault toilets serve the loops. The main roads and parking areas are paved, while campsite surfaces are gravel or dirt and can be steep. Two sites, #2 and #18, are accessible; if camping in an RV or towing, check the assigned site's dimensions because RVs and trailers are not allowed at upper-loop sites #20–24.
