“You're coming up on the Ranching Exhibit, a small roadside pavilion about life in Snake Valley. If local history interests you, give the ranching panels a few minutes; this is a brief stop rather than a museum.”

The Ranching Exhibit is a roofed, open-sided roadside pavilion on NV-488, just before you enter Great Basin National Park. Stop for a few minutes if you want a quick introduction to Snake Valley; the panels focus on ranching and modern habitation, so this is an orientation stop rather than a museum visit.

The shelter’s metal beams carry small silhouettes of people and livestock, including scenes of farm life and a cattle drive. They give the pavilion more to look at than a roadside signboard; take a moment to look up before heading on.

This stop sits in the Sagebrush life zone, named for the aromatic shrub that dominates these mountain edges. The plants grow larger higher up the slope, where the ground gets wetter. Great Basin rattlesnakes, badgers, leopard lizards and Brewer’s sparrows also live in this habitat, though spotting wildlife isn’t the point of the stop.

For a photo, frame the pavilion roof and its silhouettes against the mountains, with some sagebrush in the foreground. That keeps both the ranching exhibit and the open Snake Valley setting in the same shot.
