Anglesea Main Beach

Overview

Anglesea Main Beach is the easygoing, town‑side stretch of sand where the Surf Coast starts to show off. It’s roomy, sandy, and great for a mix of beach time: paddling and learning to surf when the swell is gentle, or wave‑watching when it’s up.

What to Do

• Swim and relax on the broad, golden sand. On smaller days it’s a friendly place to practice surfing.
• Stroll sections of the nearby Surf Coast Walk for clifftop views and photo ops.
• Settle in for low‑key beach picnics and people‑watching.

Facilities

Beach access is free. You’ll find public toilets, drink taps, and a playground nearby, plus a cafe next to the beach for easy snacks. Car parking is close to the sand. There’s also a Changing Places facility here, and mobility equipment can be booked if needed.

Safety & Conditions

This is open ocean—conditions can flip fast. Rips and shorebreak appear with changing tides and swell, so follow any lifeguard instructions and only swim where signs/flags indicate it’s safe. Australian UV bites hard even on cool days; bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.

Wildlife Nearby

If you’re keen on wildlife, the Anglesea Golf Club just up the road is known for kangaroo viewing from the clubhouse area—an easy add‑on before or after beach time.

Getting There

Plan on roughly 1.5–2 hours by car from Melbourne. V/Line buses also run from Southern Cross Station to Anglesea, but having a car makes hopping between beaches and viewpoints simpler.

Best Time to Visit

• Summer (Dec–Feb): Warmest water and classic beach days, but it’s the busiest—arrive early on weekends.
• Spring and autumn: Milder temps, great light for photos, and fewer crowds. Early mornings in summer or mid‑to‑late afternoons in spring are especially pleasant.
