The Holes in an Abalone Shell“If you notice an ear-shaped abalone shell on the beach, look at the neat row of holes along one edge. Those openings were made by the animal as it grew.”

Trail guide
Red Rocks Lookout Walk is an out-and-back from the Hurst Road access to a lookout over Red Rocks Beach. The mapped route is about 0.8 mile (1.3 km) return and takes roughly half an hour. One route description gives 2 km return; this map follows the direct car park-to-lookout line and ends before any time spent exploring the beach.
From the car park, take the short fenced approach to the T-junction and turn left for Red Rocks. The other arm heads toward Anglesea on the longer Surf Coast Walk. This is a broad gravel track through coastal scrub, downhill to the lookout and uphill on the way back. Hurst Road is unsealed and can be rough after rain.
Look east over Red Rocks Beach or west toward Anglesea. A small interpretive panel explains the nearby Point Addis Marine National Park. You can continue down to the beach for a longer stop, then retrace your steps. Dogs are allowed on lead along this coastal route.
