Hopetoun Falls

The upper viewing platform is about 20 metres from the car park. To reach the lower one, descend about 200 stairs through tree ferns, then follow a boardwalk to the river and falls. Allow roughly 30–45 minutes for the lower return walk, depending on your pace and stops. The small car park can fill at busy times, so leave some flexibility in your plans.

The lower route is steep and uneven, with slippery surfaces possible. Shoes with grip help, especially after rain; take your time on the climb back.

The falls usually have more force after rain and can dwindle to a trickle in drier spells. Wet weather brings a tradeoff: the water is livelier, but the stairs and path can be muddy and slick. If the footing doesn't suit you, enjoy the upper lookout instead of committing to the descent.

From the lower platform, include some of the Aire River in the foreground and tree ferns along the sides; the stream helps show how the falls sit in the landscape. The upper platform gives a partial view through trees, while the full waterfall comes into view from below.
