Hopetoun Falls

Overview

Hopetoun Falls is a 30 m plunge waterfall tucked into temperate rainforest in Great Otway National Park. Think towering tree ferns, slick mossy boulders, and a thunderous curtain of water that feels bigger than the map suggests. It’s a short outing with a big payoff—underrated if you love moody, green landscapes.

What You’ll See

• A rectangular plunge into a ferny gorge on the Aire River.
• Two lookouts: a quick upper deck near the car park, and the must-do lower platform right at river level for that postcard angle.
• After sunset, a small glow worm colony can be spotted near the platypus sign just back from the main viewpoint.

Getting There & Parking

Access is via Binns Road/Hopetoun Falls Road near Beech Forest. The final approach is narrow, unsealed, and signed as unsuitable for caravans or trucks. Parking is limited: a small lower area near the track plus a larger area up the road (if you park up top, it’s about a 400 m walk down the dirt road).

The Walk

Plan on roughly 1 km return (about 30 minutes total) with a steep descent and around 200 steps. Surfaces mix dirt, steps, and grippy boardwalk. It’s straightforward but can be muddy and slippery after rain. Most people spend 25 minutes to 1.5 hours here, depending on how long you linger at the base.

Best Time to Visit

The falls run well year-round, but they’re at their punchiest from May–September and after rain. For softer light, cooler temps, and fewer people, go early morning or on weekdays. Weekends and midday see more traffic, and parking is the choke point.

Photography Tips

Head to the lower platform for the hero shot; the upper deck is more of a teaser through the trees. The sturdy railings make long exposures easy—bring your tripod if that’s your thing. Rocks beyond the platform are slick; many people hop barriers for closer angles, but it’s risky and not worth a twisted ankle.

Wildlife

Listen for Superb Lyrebirds scratching in the undergrowth, watch for Crimson Rosellas flitting through the canopy, and keep an eye out for wallabies along the track. After dark, scan gently for glow worms near the platypus sign.

Rules, Facilities & Safety

• Free to visit; no toilets on-site (nearest are at the nearby redwood forest picnic area).
• No dogs/cats on the falls track; no camping, no fires, no sleeping in vehicles; drones are not permitted.
• The approach road and steps can be wet and muddy—wear shoes with good grip. A quick, cold dip in the small plunge pool is possible but it isn’t a designated swim spot and rocks are slippery.

A Note on Geology

The drop occurs where tougher Otways rock layers resist erosion; the uplifted ranges feed the constant flow you see here.
