Trail guide
Painkalac Nature Walk is a 2.5 km loop around the lower Painkalac Creek estuary, with seven QR stops and a stated walk time of about 45 minutes. Choose it for a compact introduction to the valley's wetlands and natural history; the interpretation is the main payoff.
The route map is a schematic with several access points, not a GPS track or a designated start. A connected path-and-street trace measures about 2.9 km, so follow the numbered stops and treat the drawn line as an approximation to the posted distance.
Parking is marked by the Great Ocean Road bridge, Skate Park, Inlet Crescent and Coastal Court. The loop can be joined at any of those accesses; the stored route starts at the creek bridge. It links paths with local streets and uses the Great Ocean Road bridge; take care at road junctions and crossings. The signed route's footing and grade aren't described, so its surface and accessibility aren't established.
The seven stops cover the estuary cycle, landscape history, animals of Mellors Swamp and the dunes, birds and fish, estuary plants, the valley's natural values and pressures on the area. The estuary is described as a salt-wedge system where fresh water meets the ocean, supporting a diverse mix of native life.
A different Painkalac Creek Nature Reserve walk starts north of the bridge and follows an out-and-back route 1.3 km each way. That is not this signed 2.5 km loop, and its surface and dog restriction shouldn't be carried over. The dog rule for this circuit wasn't established, so check local signs before bringing a pet.
