Moggs Creek: A Picnic in the Forest

Overview

About Moggs Creek – Coalmine Creek Walk

Why go

  • A forest traverse through ironbarks and messmates, with seasonal wildflowers and birdlife.
  • A one-way route that finishes near the Great Ocean Road instead of retracing the ridge.

Heads up

  • Requires a shuttle between the picnic ground and the Great Ocean Road.
  • Includes a substantial climb and some steep uphill and downhill sections.
Walk 23 is an 8.5 km (5.3 mi) one-way walk from Moggs Creek Picnic Ground to the Great Ocean Road near Eastern View, mostly on vehicle tracks through eucalyptus forest. Allow about three hours. The tracks are well graded, but the walk has a real climb and a steep descent. It suits hikers with a shuttle arranged; this is not a loop back to the picnic ground.

What to look forWrinkled Buttons flower along both tracks in late summer.

Wrinkled Buttons flower along both tracks in late summer. The very rare local Black-tongue Caladenia sometimes grows beside Coalmine Creek Track. Listen for kookaburras, grey fantails and white-plumed honeyeaters, and watch for echidna diggings at the track edges. The area was once surveyed for coal, but the deposit was low quality; a nine-hole golf course near the highway later reverted to native vegetation.

Prefer a loop? The separate Moggs Creek Circuit Track is a shorter 1.

The separate Moggs Creek Circuit Track is a shorter 1.8 km loop from the picnic ground, with no shuttle required. It does not follow the Coalmine Creek route.
