Guide
Malloga Falls is a pair of neighboring waterfalls tucked inside Edeowie Gorge on Wilpena Pound’s remote north-west edge. They’re usually dry, so come for the deep, rocky gorge and long walk as much as the chance of seeing water. Edeowie carries water from inside the Pound out toward the north-west plains.
The route starts on Wilpena’s visitor-centre side, passes through Pound Gap and the historic Hills Homestead, then crosses the open floor of Wilpena Pound before turning toward the gorge. Allow around 23.2 km and nine hours return; it’s rated Grade 4, hard. Past Cooinda Camp the track can be easy to lose, so this is for experienced hikers with navigation skills. Some scrambling is needed to reach the bottom of one fall.
Don’t choose this for a guaranteed waterfall: the twin falls are usually dry. For photos, keep both falls and some of the gorge in frame; the setting is part of the payoff. The route has seasonal summer closures, so check with Wilpena Visitor Centre before setting out.
