Bangsund Cabin is a small historic fishing compound on the northeastern end of Isle Royale, beside Rock Harbor. It is now the summer field base of the Isle Royale Wolf-Moose Project, and is known to visitors for the “Mooseum,” a collection of antlered bull moose skulls with displays about the island’s wildlife and research.

The easiest way to include it is on the seasonal MV Sandy trip from Rock Harbor to Edisen Fishery and Rock Harbor Lighthouse. That visit includes a walk of about one-third mile from the fishery to the cabin. Private boats, canoes, and kayaks are other ways to arrive; there is no hiking approach from Isle Royale’s main trail network.

This is still a research station, not just a historic display. The Mooseum is the visitor-facing part of the stop; public information does not specify whether research rooms are open, so do not assume the work areas are part of the visit. Visitor information also does not list cabin-specific food, drinking water, or public toilets. Plan those needs before leaving Rock Harbor.

Norwegian fisherman Jack Bangsund built the main cabin in 1926 and added back cabins in 1937. The remaining compound includes the residence, two sleeping cabins, and a log crib. After Bangsund died in 1959, the property became a base for researchers Durward Allen and David Mech; after Allen retired, Rolf Peterson made it the Wolf-Moose Project’s headquarters in 1975.

The collection of antlered bull moose skulls is the stop’s most distinctive sight, alongside natural-history material and discoveries from the research. The broad outdoor racks make the clearest defining photo of the visit. Each summer, field crews meet here to collate data and inventory, process, and label samples before sending them to mainland labs. The cabin connects the historic fishing settlement with the long-running study of Isle Royale’s wolves and moose.
