SS Algoma Wreck

A cold-water dive over a steamer broken apart by an 1885 storm.

Overview

About SS Algoma Wreck

Why stop

  • A protected wreck with a compelling 1885 Great Lakes story.

Heads up

  • Specialist cold-water diving, boat access, permits, and no cylinder fills.
SS Algoma is a protected passenger-steamer wreck in Lake Superior off Isle Royale. It’s a remote, boat-access dive for experienced cold-water divers, not a shore stop or an intact hull to swim through. The wreck field spans 10 to 100 feet of water, so this is one to match to your training and equipment.

Every diver must register at Rock Harbor, Windigo, or Houghton Visitor Center before diving and return the completed permit afterward. Surface water rarely tops 55°F; below 50 feet it is 34–37°F. A full wetsuit is necessary and a drysuit is recommended. There are no cylinder fills on Isle Royale, and dive gear must be washed in warm chlorinated tap water and dried for seven days before use in the park.
