Three Mile Campground is a primitive backcountry hub right on the Rock Harbor shoreline—close enough to be convenient from Rock Harbor, yet far enough to feel like you’ve arrived in Isle Royale’s quiet. It’s a favorite first or last night stop for hikers and paddlers thanks to its location, lake views, and a sociable dock.
Campsites & Facilities
Expect simple, well-sited options: multiple tent sites plus eight three-sided shelters, several perched near the water for sunrise and sunset color. Facilities are minimal—outhouse toilets, no showers, no electricity, and no picnic tables. There’s a water source, but reliability and potability vary, so plan to treat or filter from the lake. Campfires aren’t allowed, so bring a backpacking stove.
Getting There
Reach it on foot via the Rock Harbor Trail (about three miles from Rock Harbor). If you’re carrying a heavy pack, the Tobin Harbor Trail is a slightly longer but easier alternative. The campground is also accessible by canoe, kayak, or private boat, with a dock that makes coming and going by water straightforward.
On the Way: Suzy’s Cave
The approach from Rock Harbor passes Suzy’s Cave—an inland sea arch formed when Lake Superior’s waves bit into higher ancient shorelines. It’s an easy add-on and a fun natural history stop en route.
Scenery & Wildlife
Lake Superior is the star here. Many sites face the channel, delivering breezes, loon calls, and big sky light at day’s edges. Foxes are known to wander through, and moose are possible in the broader area—give all wildlife space and store food securely.
