Expect mellow grades, aspen–spruce shade, and the crumbling remains of early 20th‑century mining structures tucked into the trees.

What you’ll actually see: remnants of the mine and townsite, occasional meadow openings, and glimpses toward nearby mountains and the valley. The interpretive signs exist but multiple recent reports note they’re overgrown, damaged, or missing—so treat this as a ruins ramble more than a polished outdoor museum.

Route options: stick to the lower paved loop for the easiest, most accessible experience. If you want more, you can link upper loops through forest to stretch the outing to roughly 3 km, or follow the side trail about 1 km uphill to Punchbowl Falls—a distinctive little waterfall pouring from a narrow cleft into a pool. Expect a few short, steeper bits on these upper branches and more natural, dirt tread.

A quick history primer for context: the Pocahontas town boomed after 1908, peaked around 2,000 residents, then shut down in 1921 when coal prices dropped and the local coal proved poor quality. Nature has reclaimed most of it, but the bones are still there if you look.

Best time to hike: late spring through early fall when the paths are clear and vegetation is lush. This one’s fine in light rain and cool weather; you’re mostly in the trees. Go early or late for a quieter loop and better chances of spotting wildlife.
