Overview
Sunwapta Pass is a high mountain saddle on the Icefields Parkway, sitting around 2,035 m. It marks the boundary between Jasper and Banff and is one of the parkway’s highest points—second only to Bow Pass. You’re here for the big skies, glaciated peaks, and that classic feeling of crossing into the high alpine without leaving your car.
Sunwapta is a hydrological divide: northward waters head to the Athabasca basin, southward to the North Saskatchewan. It’s a natural threshold between two watersheds and two national parks—more milestone than destination, but a memorable one.

Expect rugged summits, broad U‑shaped valleys, and views toward the Columbia Icefield area. The approach features winding switchbacks and hairpin turns that deliver you to a simple roadside pullout with immediate photo ops. There are short, informal paths from the pavement—great for a quick peek, but they can be slippery in early spring and fall.
Travelers sometimes spot wildlife near the pass, including bears, especially along the parkway shoulders. Keep distance, never feed wildlife, and use pullouts—don’t stop in the travel lane. Dawn and dusk are your best odds.
The road is paved but steep with tight curves near the summit. Weather swings quickly up here—wind, fog, and sudden snow are all possible well into early summer. Drive cautiously and be ready for changing grip and visibility.
