Marble Canyon

Overview

If you want big scenery for minimal effort, this is it. Marble Canyon traces the rim of a narrow limestone gorge carved by Tokumm Creek, with multiple footbridges and railings giving you dizzying looks into the chasm. It’s a quick, highly photogenic wander through a landscape still showing regrowth from a past wildfire.

Route and stats

Plan on roughly 1.1 miles total (out and back). Parks Canada lists the route as 0.9 km one way with about 65 m of gain and 35 m of loss; other trip reports put the round‑trip distance closer to 1.4–1.8 km with gentle ups and downs overall. Expect a few short stair sections and uneven tread—simple, but not stroller or wheelchair friendly. Red Chairs await near the upper viewpoints.

What you’ll see

The star is the gorge itself—smooth, pale limestone walls with blue water squeezing through below, plus a waterfall at the upper end. The bridges let you peer straight down into the canyon from different angles, and burned forest along the route offers clear views and interesting contrast as the area regenerates.

Best time to hike

Open and worthwhile year‑round. Summer is a breeze in running shoes; winter often brings packed snow and icy patches where traction aids make a big difference. It’s popular because it’s easy, but the short distance means people spread out quickly. It’s typically quieter than better‑known canyon walks over the border.

Logistics and tips

Start from the Marble Canyon parking lot off Highway 93S, across from the Marble Canyon Campground and about 89 km north of Radium Hot Springs. There are toilets at the trailhead. Dogs are allowed on leash. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent, so download info before you go. In winter, remember Parks Canada’s note that many winter trails are not maintained or patrolled—treat bridges and shaded corners with respect and keep children close behind the railings.

Extend the outing

If you want more, continue along the Vermilion River toward the Paint Pots. The Marble Canyon–Paint Pots connector is about 2.9 km one way and makes a great two‑hour return add‑on through a mix of mature and burned forest.
