Overview

About St Sunday Crag and Grisedale Tarn

A demanding circular fell walk from Patterdale climbs through Glenamara Park and over the ridge via Birks and Gavel Pike to St Sunday Crag, then descends to Grisedale Tarn before returning down Grisedale. The stored 9.0-mile distance is the complete loop from the Patterdale Hotel parking area, including the lane and valley return; allow about 5.5 hours. The reward is a superb sequence of Ullswater, ridge and tarn views, but this is a mountain day rather than a gentle tarn stroll: rough and sometimes boggy ground, steep climbing and a loose descent need sure footing. Dogs may come, but keep them close and on lead around livestock and steep ground.

Why go

  • big fell views over Ullswater
  • distinctive ridge and crags
  • beautiful Grisedale Tarn
  • satisfying circular route
  • quiet valley return

Heads up

  • steep loose descent
  • boggy sections
  • limited Patterdale parking
  • route finding in mist
  • road walking at finish

Parking

Start at the pay-and-display car park opposite Patterdale Hotel. The nearby King George V Playing Field is another local option, but both village car parks are limited and fill quickly on busy weekends; do not block the A592 or village lanes. Bus 508 serves Patterdale Hotel.

Safety

This is a high mountain route with about 748m of ascent, rough and sometimes boggy ground, a steep loose descent from Deepdale Hause, stream or ford crossings, and traffic on the final road and A592 section. Navigation is harder in cloud or poor visibility. Keep dogs close or on lead around cattle, sheep and steep ground.
