Best time to go

The cooler dry-season months of May to September are when the campground host is on site. Whatever the season, early morning and the last hour or two of daylight are the kindest times of day for both the swim and the walk, simply because the heat has backed off.

This is the drive-in Category A campground at the Wangi Falls precinct, and it carries more facilities than the other camping areas in the park. The real draw is proximity: you are a short, accessible walk from the plunge pool, so a swim before breakfast or at the end of the day takes no planning at all.

The falls and the swimWangi Falls is one of the park's best known swimming holes, and it flows all year round, which…

Wangi Falls is one of the park's best known swimming holes, and it flows all year round, which is unusual enough to make it worth planning around. Twin cascades drop over the rock face into a wide, dark pool ringed by monsoon forest.

A few honest safety notes:

  • The water gets deep quickly near the edge, so treat it as open water rather than a shallow paddle.
  • Swimming above the falls is not allowed. Stay in the main plunge pool.
  • There is an emergency call device near the carpark if something goes wrong.
Booking and arrivalCampsites are designated and must be booked and paid for online before you arrive.

Campsites are designated and must be booked and paid for online before you arrive. There is no payment in the park, so sort it out while you still have signal. You also need an NT Parks Visitor Pass for the park itself.

Access is straightforward: drive-in for all vehicle types, including caravans, which makes this a practical base if you are towing and do not want to tackle rougher tracks.

On site you will find toilets with accessible facilities and change tables, showers, running water, a firepit, gas barbecues, information signage, a phone and free Wi-Fi.

The important detail: water must be boiled before drinking. Bring a reliable way to boil it, or carry enough drinking water for your stay. Gas barbecues are limited in number, so a portable stove saves you waiting at dinner time. During the peak May to September period there is a campground host on site, which is handy for questions.

Beside the carpark there is a large grassy picnic area with tables, plus a cafe with undercover outdoor seating serving hot and cold food and coffee if you want a morning off cooking.

The walk above the fallsThe Wangi Falls walk is 1.6 km return and takes about an hour.

The Wangi Falls walk is 1.6 km return and takes about an hour. It starts at the plunge pool, threads through monsoon forest to a viewing platform at the base of the falls, then climbs stairs to the escarpment for a top-down view.

It is graded moderate and steep in sections, with real stair climbing. Do it early in the day, carry water, and skip it if stairs in heat are not for you. The base viewing platform alone is a rewarding turnaround point.

Honest drawbacksIf you want a sealed-road campsite with showers and a year-round swimming hole a few minutes…

If you want a sealed-road campsite with showers and a year-round swimming hole a few minutes from your tent, this earns its reputation.

  • Facilities are functional and basic rather than resort-style. Showers and toilets, not much beyond that.
  • Because this is one of the more popular stops in the park, expect company at the pool and picnic area through the middle of the day during busier periods.
  • No walk-up payment means a spontaneous overnight stop can fall apart if you have not booked.
  • The boil-water requirement adds a small chore to every brew and bottle refill.
