About Tjenya Falls Campground

Why stop

  • Small rocky pools nearby
  • Quiet wilderness camp setting

Heads up

  • Long, hot walk with limited water
This is one of three walk-in campgrounds on the Tabletop Track, and it is the overnight stop that comes with a feature right on its doorstep. Tjenya Falls sits less than 200 metres away, back along the track towards Wangi Falls: a small cascade under about 2 metres with a series of rock pools tucked into the stone. The camp itself is perched on a dry plateau in open savanna woodland, so the walk down to the falls feels like a distinct change of scene at the end of a long day.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

The track normally opens June to September. June to August is the cooler window and the most comfortable time to walk a long, shadeless plateau section. Later in the season the days get hotter, often above 30 C, and the track tends to be quieter, which is a fair trade only if you are confident about heat and carrying capacity. Whenever you go, expect the pools at the falls to change with the season and treat them as the nearby defining feature rather than a designated swimming spot; conditions, depth and water quality vary, and the section leaving Tjenya is exposed with limited water and no swimming holes.

Booking and facilities

  • Category B, walk-in campground. Multi-day walking fees apply.
  • Book online through the Parks Booking System before you set out.
  • No on-site amenities are listed or verified here, and the track as a whole has minimal facilities. Plan to be completely self-sufficient for water, cooking, waste and shelter.

More about Tjenya Falls Campground

What it feels likeRemote and basic.

Remote and basic. The Tabletop Track passes through savanna woodland, forest, scenic pools and rough rocky country, and this section is firmly on the open, exposed side of that mix. Camping is on a plateau with big sky and little shade, and the wider track is known for very light foot traffic, so nights here can be genuinely quiet. Water monitors, rock wallabies, pythons, native birds and dingoes are all part of the wider Tabletop Range, though nothing is guaranteed at any one campsite.

How it fits the routeThe full Tabletop Track circuit is 39 to 46 km and usually takes 2 to 4 days, with access…

The full Tabletop Track circuit is 39 to 46 km and usually takes 2 to 4 days, with access points at Florence Falls, Wangi Falls and Walker Creek. Official route sections are Florence Falls to Wangi Falls 20 km, Wangi Falls to Walker Creek 20.2 km, and Walker Creek to Florence Falls 13.3 km. Tjenya breaks up the long southern leg: roughly 11.4 km from the southern campground via Wangi Creek, and about 11.5 km onwards to Walker Creek. By the shortest route it sits around 7 km from Wangi Falls.

PreparationThe Tabletop Track is grade 4 and can be hard-going, hot and exposed, with steep sections.

The Tabletop Track is grade 4 and can be hard-going, hot and exposed, with steep sections. Carry at least 2 litres of water per person per day, plus food, navigation, first aid, cooking gear, sun and insect protection, and sleeping equipment. Some areas have limited water, and all water must be treated before drinking, so build your plan around what you can carry rather than what you hope to find. The creek near the falls is the local water source, but it should not be counted on as reliable. Reception is poor or absent in places, so an emergency communication device is recommended.

Honest tradeoffsSmall rocky pools nearby and a quiet wilderness camp setting are the draw.
  • Small rocky pools nearby and a quiet wilderness camp setting are the draw.
  • The cost is a long, hot walk with limited water, no verified comforts, and a committing multi-day route in and out.
