Parking

Park at the Department of Conservation access area opposite Mt Ella Station cowshed. Follow the orange markers and replace electric-tape gates. A trip account puts the farm-track approach to the riverside start at roughly 3 km each way; the mapped trail length excludes it. Parking capacity and facilities were not found.

Safety

This is demanding mountain terrain with an approximately 840 m climb, repeated creek crossings, muddy tread and slips. Heavy rain can make rivers dangerous. Lower markers are not consistently described, so expect difficult route finding and check current access information. Dogs are prohibited in the park.

Watson Creek Route is a hard out-and-back from a riverside start in the Matakitaki Valley to a former hut clearing near the bushline. The mapped trail is about 5 km each way (10 km / 6.2 miles round trip) and climbs roughly 840 m to about 1,250 m. Plan for around nine hours from the station car park. A trip account puts the farm-track approach at about 3 km each way, so the full car-park outing is roughly 16 km (10 miles); that access is separate from the mapped trail line. This is a remote tramp for fit, experienced walkers comfortable with rough terrain and route finding.

From the farm track, the path enters beech forest and climbs to Watson Creek, which it crosses repeatedly. Accounts describe muddy tread, fallen trees, small slips and short scrambles; some parties have lost the markers. The route is not a straightforward valley stroll, and reports differ on how clear the lower approach is.

The mapped route ends at a flat creek-side former hut clearing near 1,250 m, with views up the valley toward the Ella Range. The lower forest rises through beech toward mountain beech near tree line. The unmarked climb above the clearing toward the tarns and Mole Tops saddle is a separate, more demanding extension; it is not included in this route.

Use the Department of Conservation access car park opposite the Mt Ella Station cowshed, then follow the orange markers and replace any electric-tape gates. Heavy rain can make the crossings dangerous. Dogs are not allowed in the park; check current access and route information before setting out because the lower markers and tread have been described inconsistently.
