Bridge Walk

Bridge Walk is a guided crossing on the New River Gorge Bridge’s narrow maintenance catwalk, tucked under its highway deck. You get a close look at the steelwork and a view down into the gorge from about 850 feet above the New River. This is a reserved tour, not a public path from the overlooks. Set aside two to three hours from check-in through return. If open heights are a hard no for you, take in the bridge from an overlook instead.

Check in at the Bridge Walk office in Lansing, then ride a shuttle to Canyon Rim Visitor Center. A short path leads down to the bridge; after the crossing, you climb a short trail back to road level and shuttle back to the office. Expect about 1¼ miles of walking in all, including the inclined approaches, not just the bridge crossing. You need to stand and walk independently.

The catwalk is about 24 inches wide, roughly 25 feet below the roadway and around 851 feet above the river. A continuous harness connection and railing help, but the open drop is real and traffic overhead can make the structure vibrate. The operator requires guests to be at least eight years old and 48 inches tall, and to fit the harness. Bags, food and drinks stay off the catwalk; secure a phone or camera with a tether. Wear stable walking shoes and bring a light layer—the bridge can feel cooler than the office.

Built from 1974 to 1977, this single-span steel arch shortened a difficult trip through the gorge from about 40 minutes on narrow roads to less than a minute across the bridge. The span is 3,030 feet long, with a 1,700-foot arch; its roadway stands 876 feet above the river. The weathering steel’s rust-colored patina protects it without needing paint.

Guides pause for photos and questions. Point a tethered camera along the catwalk and truss, then down toward the river to show the scale of the drop. The route is exposed, so keep a secure hold on anything you bring.

The Lansing headquarters is the tour’s start and return point, with parking, guest restrooms and a small shop. Food and drinks cannot go on the catwalk, so plan a meal before or after the tour. Book ahead: groups have limited places, and a tour can be canceled when conditions are unsafe.
