Canyon Rim Visitor Center

Canyon Rim Visitor Center is the main information stop for New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, just north of Fayetteville on U.S. 19. It also serves visitors to Bluestone National Scenic River and Gauley River National Recreation Area. Stop early if you want a ranger's help choosing a route, maps, and a quick introduction before heading deeper into the gorge.

The rear deck opens on a view about two miles south into the park. A short boardwalk continues to two observation decks with clear views of the New River Gorge Bridge and the wooded gorge around it. This is the stop's strongest payoff; even a quick visit brings you to one of the park's defining views. For photos, leave some of the gorge around the steel arch so the bridge's scale reads in the frame.

A ramp reaches the upper observation deck. Going down to the lower boardwalk means a substantial stair descent and a climb back up. The upper deck and indoor windows still give you the gorge view if you skip those stairs. The boardwalk is a scenic visitor route, not a trailhead for longer park hikes.

The exhibit room covers the people, towns, industry, recreation, and natural history of the gorge, and an 11-minute film gives a quick introduction. Rangers can help with maps and trip planning. The sales area carries books, gifts, and topographic maps. Think of the exhibits and film as a useful primer; the outdoor view is the part that makes this stop memorable.

The 8,700-square-foot center opened in May 1991 and received its first major upgrade in 2024. Sandstone and red oak were chosen to echo the exposed sandstone ledges outside. The renovation refreshed its exhibits and auditorium, linking the indoor introduction with the landscape you see from the deck.
