Fayetteville Trail

Fayetteville Trail is a 3.96-mile point-to-point route, one way, connecting the Wolf Creek access on Fayette Station Road with Kaymoor Top. It is open to hikers and bikers and is rated moderate to strenuous. Expect rolling climbs and a creek crossing; allow about three hours for the one-way walk. It is not a loop, so arrange a pickup or plan a separate return route before you set out.

The Wolf Creek access is reached from town by crossing the New River on the Tunney Hunsaker Bridge and continuing along Fayette Station Road. Parking at the trailhead is very limited. Use only the permitted spaces at the trailhead or the right-side pullouts beyond the hairpin turn; parking along the left approach is prohibited. Kaymoor Top has a separate access and parking area at the other end.

The trail crosses a creek and repeatedly rises and falls rather than holding one steady grade. It connects with several other named routes, including Kaymoor, Bridge, Park Loop, Timber Ridge, Butcher Branch, Kaymoor Miners and Craig Branch. Check your intended endpoint and connector before leaving the main line; those adjoining trails change the distance and direction of the walk.

A connector gives hiking access toward Long Point, but that destination is outside the 3.96-mile Fayetteville Trail line. Long Point ends at a rock outcrop with broad views of the gorge and New River Gorge Bridge. If you add it, frame the river and bridge together from the outcrop so the bridge gives the canyon scale.

Kaymoor Top connects with trails leading to the old coal-mine site and its wayside exhibits. That mining history is a worthwhile extension from this end, but it belongs to the adjoining Kaymoor route, not to the Fayetteville Trail mileage.
