Getting there

Stehekin has no road connection to the rest of Washington. Visitors arrive on foot, by boat, or by plane, then reach the bridge about 4.5 miles up Stehekin Valley Road from the Landing. Think of it as part of a Stehekin day, not a drive-up stop from outside the valley.

Harlequin Bridge is a road bridge over the Stehekin River where Stehekin Valley Road meets Company Creek Road. It is one of only three road bridges across the river. If you're already traveling up the valley, this is a quick pause for the river view and the bridge's history; it isn't a reason to plan a visit by itself. The site has interpretive information and a scenic view.

The current bridge is the fifth built here. In 1948, the U.S. Forest Service built the fourth as a timber Baltimore Truss for vehicle traffic. That was an unusual use of the design, which was usually made of steel for railroad bridges. When the older bridge was replaced in 2000, the new design was made to honor it.

What to frameThe rust-colored cross-bracing gives the bridge its character.

The rust-colored cross-bracing gives the bridge its character. In a photo, include both the timber deck and the truss so the structure reads clearly as a bridge, rather than another forest or river view.
