Stehekin Old School is a one-room log schoolhouse on Stehekin Valley Road, a few yards from Rainbow Falls at mile 3.4. It is a compact heritage stop for anyone curious about how people built community life in this isolated valley. The valley’s self-guided walking and bike tour includes it, so it fits naturally into a slower trip through Stehekin.

Before the school, Stehekin families taught children at home or brought a paid teacher to the valley. In 1921, residents got permission from the U.S. Forest Service to build on its land, then used timber gathered nearby and their own labor. The school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; that collective effort is the story to look for as much as the log walls.

The Bells’ schoolThe school closed during World War II.

The school closed during World War II. Lloyd and Amy Bell helped reopen it and began co-teaching there in 1948, sharing one teacher’s salary. They taught in Stehekin through the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. A newer school built in 1988 stands nearby, separate from this historic building.

Fit it into the valley tourThe old schoolhouse is a visitor stop, but current interior access and hours aren’t specified.

The old schoolhouse is a visitor stop, but current interior access and hours aren’t specified. Treat it as a quick exterior stop unless you can confirm entry locally. If you’re following the self-guided tour, pick up its map at Golden West Visitor Center. For a photo, frame the porch and log walls with the school sign; those details make its purpose immediately clear.
