Permits and access

A backcountry permit is required for every overnight stay. During peak season, get one before arriving in Stehekin; from October through May, the self-permit station is outside Golden West Visitor Center. The lower Rainbow Loop trailhead is 2.6 road miles from Stehekin Landing, and the upper one is 5 miles up-valley. The summer shuttle serves both. The camp’s own trail distance is not published.

A hanging valley on the approachRainbow Creek’s smaller alpine glacier carved a hanging valley above the deeper Stehekin Valley.

Rainbow Creek’s smaller alpine glacier carved a hanging valley above the deeper Stehekin Valley. When the ice retreated about 10,000 years ago, the creek spread ground rock and sediment into an alluvial fan that the Rainbow Loop climbs on its way toward the valley bench.

Expect a primitive setupOne 2022 backpacking report described little usable tent space and water a short walk away.

One 2022 backpacking report described little usable tent space and water a short walk away. That is a single, older account, not a current facilities report. The available listing shows a toilet, but its type and condition are not confirmed, and no source establishes a potable water tap. Plan for a simple backcountry camp and verify current conditions before you go.
