Thunder Woods Nature Trail

Thunder Woods Nature Trail is a short interpretive loop above Thunder Arm of Diablo Lake. From the campground access, the full walk is about 1.2 miles round trip: roughly 300 yards on Thunder Creek Trail, the just-under-a-mile nature loop, then the same short access back. Give it about 1 to 1.5 hours if you pause at the numbered nature markers. It is a good fit for a brief forest walk with more to notice than distance suggests.

Use the large shared lot above the boat ramp at Colonial Creek South Campground, off State Route 20 near mile 130. Follow the campground signs to the amphitheater, then continue south on Thunder Creek Trail. Pass the first right turn and take the signed second junction, about 300 yards from the amphitheater. The loop has numbered nature markers. Descriptions differ on whether it is one-way, so follow any direction sign posted at the junction.

The loop winds through moss-draped old-growth cedars and forest above the turquoise water of Thunder Arm. This is a close-up forest walk: slow down for the moss, tree trunks and understory rather than expecting a summit view. Spring brings the first flowers; autumn is a good season to look for mushrooms.

The route climbs enough to feel moderately steep in places and crosses a loose-rock boulder field. Footing can be tricky if your balance is uncertain; trekking poles may help over the talus. The loose rock is the main reason this short walk feels more demanding than its mileage suggests.

Thunder Creek is glacier-fed and carries fine rock flour, which gives the water its cloudy blue color. Through the trees, that bright strip of water is a reminder that this small nature loop sits above a much larger river-and-lake landscape. Pets are not allowed on trails in North Cascades National Park.
