Before you go

Parking

Abbey Headland Car Park on Abbey Lane; large car park with 100+ spaces. Charges apply, blue badge holders pay, and card or cash payment is accepted.

Best time to go

Allow about 1 hour 5 minutes at a typical walking pace, and more if you are stopping often or travelling with wheels. The reward is straightforward: open clifftop walking east of the abbey headland with the sea alongside for most of the outward leg, which makes the return trip feel like a different view rather than a repeat.

Safety

Follow the road from the car park if mobility is restricted; the short 1:8 slope starts the Cleveland Way. Stay on the fenced path, keep away from eroding coastal edges, and do not touch the electrified field-side fence or let children or dogs contact it.

This is an out-and-back walk of 3.1 km (about 1.9 miles) round trip, meaning the distance already includes the return leg. It is graded easy, with 41 m of ascent and 41 m of descent, a low point of 28 m and a high point of 61 m. It carries the Miles without Stiles "For all" classification, so there are no steps and no stiles anywhere on the route.

That turning point is the end of the plotted route, so there is no loop to complete and no need to work out an onward link.

  • From Abbey Headland Car Park on Abbey Lane, turn left.
  • If mobility is a concern, follow the road rather than the higher pavement to reach the Cleveland Way.
  • After roughly 400 m, take the Cleveland Way on the right.
  • Follow the coastal path east until just before Whitby Holiday Park, then turn around and return the same way.
Surface and gradientsUnderfoot it is a mix of about 268 m of asphalt, 1.8 km of path and 961 m of road.

Underfoot it is a mix of about 268 m of asphalt, 1.8 km of path and 961 m of road. Gradients are very gentle, around 1:20, with one short 1:8 section where the Cleveland Way begins, which is the steepest thing you will meet. The clifftop path runs 1 to 1.5 m wide, with occasional wider passing places, so it works for pushchairs and for people using their own wheelchairs, though two-way traffic needs a little patience at the narrowest points.

  • The path is fenced on both sides, and the field-side fence is electrified, so do not touch it.
  • This is a clifftop route, so stay on the path and treat the seaward side with respect, as coastal edges erode.
  • The road approach at the start and the short 1:8 pitch are the two practical things to plan for on an otherwise easy walk.

Continuing beyond the plotted end to the small car park further on turns this into a linear walk rather than an out-and-back, and adds a 1:7 slope on an unsurfaced path. Treat that as a separate outing with different requirements, not an extension of the "For all" route.
