Overview

About Blue John Cavern

Why stop

  • Rare mineral and fossil geology on one guided route

Heads up

  • 245 steps with narrow, uneven footing
  • Cool, damp underground route
This is a show cave with Blue John mining history, and the two sit side by side on the same route. Blue John is a rare banded fluorspar (calcium fluoride) associated with the Castleton area, and this cavern contains 8 of the 15 known veins. You walk down through a series of natural caverns in Carboniferous limestone that were opened up and worked by hand, so the mining story and the geology are visible together as you go.

Before you go

Best time to go

Any dry-ish, settled day works well, since the approach and car park sit high on an exposed hillside and the walk from car to entrance is more pleasant without driving rain. Cave conditions themselves barely change with the seasons, so this is a solid rainy-day option when the tops are socked in.

Steps, footing and access

This is the honest part. The cavern route has 245 steps, and the largest single flight is 96 steps. Steps can be narrow, uneven and damp, with a supporting handrail along the way. The route is not accessible to wheelchairs, prams or buggies, and the operator specifically cautions anyone with respiratory problems or heart conditions. Dogs on leads are welcome.

More about Blue John Cavern

What you see and doA guided walk-through tour lasting roughly 45 minutes to an hour, led by guides who talk…
  • A guided walk-through tour lasting roughly 45 minutes to an hour, led by guides who talk through the mining and the rock.
  • Veins and nodules of Blue John pointed out in place, plus the marks and workings left by hand mining.
  • Fossilised marine remains in the limestone walls, a reminder that all of this was once seabed.
  • Caverns lit by electric lighting.
  • A gift shop on site, plus a cafe for light snacks.
Practical tipsWear shoes with real grip, as damp limestone underfoot is easy to slip on.
  • Wear shoes with real grip, as damp limestone underfoot is easy to slip on.
  • Bring a layer or two, because the underground route runs cooler than the surface even on a warm day.
  • Leave the buggy in the car; you will be carrying small children on the stairs otherwise.
  • Parking is on site, and the hillside setting above Castleton makes it easy to pair with a walk toward Mam Tor.
Honest drawbacksThe stairs and the footing are the deciding drawback.

The stairs and the footing are the deciding drawback. A long descent followed by a climb back up on narrow, uneven, damp steps will not suit everyone, and the climb comes when legs are already tired. The route is also cool and damp throughout. Come prepared for that and the payoff is an unusual, close-up look at Blue John in the rock where it formed.
