Overview

About North Lees Campsite

Why stop

  • Quiet base for climbing, walking and moorland days

Heads up

  • Open-plan layout offers little privacy when full
  • Hathersage shops require a 30-minute walk
Solid fuel fires and disposable charcoal barbecues are not allowed, because of the fire risk to the surrounding habitats and wildlife areas. Small tents suit the site best; large tents and gazebos or event shelters have limited space here, so a big family setup or group shelter may not fit comfortably.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

The campsite operates through most of the year, with a recurring shutdown around Christmas and New Year, so plan winter trips with that pattern in mind. Spring and autumn suit walkers and climbers who want quieter fields and cooler days, while summer weekends bring the busiest fields and the most pressure on the limited parking. Arriving earlier in the day helps with both parking and choosing a level patch of grass.

Access, parking and supplies

The site is on Birley Lane, Hathersage. Parking is the biggest practical constraint: car parking is limited, reserved bays exist only for pitches that include them, and you cannot drive cars, motorbikes or campervans onto the grass. There are dedicated campervan bays with optional electric hook up, and roof tents are restricted to those bays. For everything else, expect to carry or barrow your kit from the parking area to your pitch.

There are no shops on site beyond reception, so bring your food and fuel. Hathersage is the nearest place for shops and is roughly a 30 minute walk away, and reaching public transport involves that same walk. Because the setting is secluded, mobile phone signal can be unreliable, so download maps and confirm plans before you arrive.

This is a national park run campsite rather than a sight to visit, and it works best as a practical base for days on foot or on rock. The appeal is simple: you pitch in a quiet, sheltered valley about 1.5 miles north of Hathersage, and climbing, bouldering, walking and cycling routes start within a short walk of the gate. Visitors consistently praise the calm, secluded feel and the clean facilities, and that combination is the main reason to book.

The campsite sits on three gently sloping, open plan fields inside the Stanage-North Lees estate, which takes in managed woodland, farmland and moorland. There are no marked hedged compartments or private nooks, so expect an open, communal layout where you can see across the site. The valley position gives shelter, and seasonal bird and wildlife watching is part of the experience on the surrounding estate.

Things to do nearbyClimbing and bouldering on the estate, reachable on foot rather than by car.
  • Climbing and bouldering on the estate, reachable on foot rather than by car.
  • Walking routes straight from the site onto woodland, farmland and moorland ground.
  • Cycling in the surrounding lanes and estate tracks.
  • Quiet time on site itself, which is what most people come for after a long day out.
FacilitiesSeparate fully equipped men's and women's shower and toilet blocks.

  • A dedicated disabled toilet and shower facility.
  • A covered outdoor washing up area and recycling bins.
  • Wheelbarrows for moving equipment to your pitch.
  • Reception selling ice creams, cold drinks, maps, guidebooks, gifts and small camping sundries.

The site is compact and open plan, so it offers little privacy and can feel close quartered when full. Parking is genuinely limited, the walk to shops and transport is real rather than token, and the ban on fires and disposable barbecues rules out a classic campfire evening. If you want an on site shop, a bar, food service or space for a large tent, this is not the right choice. If you want a quiet grass pitch, solid showers and trails on the doorstep, it delivers exactly that.
