Trail guide
The Pennine Way's Peak District stage is a one-way 16-mile (26 km) walk from Edale to Crowden, crossing Kinder Scout and Bleaklow. Allow around nine hours. This is the trail's opening section, not the entire 268-mile route and not the separate short Edale circular. You get a proper high-moor crossing: one steep climb, long miles over open upland, and a drawn-out descent. The views and the feeling of crossing a broad stretch of moorland are the draw; the length and point-to-point logistics make this a serious hill day.
Begin at the Old Nag's Head, Edale's traditional Pennine Way marker, then follow the route out of the valley and up Jacob's Ladder. The direct path is steep and stone-pitched, so the first climb is the sharpest effort. Its name comes from Jacob Marshall, whose pack ponies used it as a shortcut while carrying goods over the Pennines. Above, Kinder's broad plateau opens to wide views. It's also the site of the 1932 Mass Trespass, a turning point in the campaign for countryside access. Don't follow the lower Edale circular by mistake: it shares a section of the Pennine Way, then leaves it to loop back to the village.
From Kinder, the path continues north onto Bleaklow. The restored peat bogs are especially lively with birdsong in spring and summer. The trail stays high across open moor before the long descent into Crowden among the reservoirs. The official stage figure is 26 km, usually rounded to 16 miles; a mapped line measures a little over that, so treat the headline distance as approximate. Expect roughly 600–700 m of climbing. The open, windswept crossing and long downhill finish are the hard parts, not a technical scramble.
Edale station is beside Penny Pot Café, and the village pay-and-display car park is across from the café. The traditional starting marker at the Old Nag's Head is a short walk through the village; cafés and pubs are available around the start. Crowden is the finish, so arrange onward transport before setting out. This is a point-to-point day, not a loop back to Edale.
