Guide
Josip Jović Memorial is a small roadside war monument on the Entrance 2 side of Plitvice Lakes National Park, along the main road about 1.5 km from Mukinje on the park’s half-marathon route. It marks the place where police officer Josip Jović was killed on Easter Sunday, 31 March 1991, aged 21. Think of it as a quiet remembrance stop rather than another waterfall or lakeside walk.
Access is the catch: a safe pull-off, visitor parking, and a pedestrian approach could not be verified. Don’t make an improvised roadside stop or walk along the road; visit only if you can confirm a safe, permitted way to reach the monument.
The Plitvice Lakes police operation responded to the park’s occupation and a blockade on a key north–south road. Jović was the first Croatian police officer killed in the Homeland War; the park says nine officers were wounded. Heavy snow and thick fog covered Plitvice that Easter morning, a stark part of the story behind this small memorial.
This is the roadside monument near Entrance 2, not the separate memorial centre in Jović’s hometown of Aržano. No visitor facilities were identified at the monument itself, and nearby park services are separate stops whose access from the roadside memorial is not established.
