Drakes Beach and Visitor Center

Overview

About Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center

Why stop

  • Distinctive whale skeleton and marine exhibits
  • Easy indoor add-on to Drakes Beach

Heads up

  • Compact visit rather than a full museum
  • Less comprehensive than Bear Valley Visitor Center
This is the small indoor visitor center at Drakes Beach, built in 1965 and sitting right behind the sand and the pale sandstone cliffs. It works best as a 20 to 30 minute orientation stop paired with a beach walk, and as a genuinely good place to duck inside when wind or rain rolls off the ocean.

  • A minke whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling, the centerpiece of the room and the reason most people linger.
  • Exhibits on 1500s maritime exploration, including the era of explorers, ships, and old seafaring trades.
  • Displays on marine fossils and the marine environments just offshore.
  • Interpretive information to help you make sense of the beach, cliffs, and coastline outside.
How it differs from Bear ValleyBear Valley Visitor Center is the larger, more comprehensive hub for the seashore as a whole.

Bear Valley Visitor Center is the larger, more comprehensive hub for the seashore as a whole. This one is compact and ocean focused, trading breadth for a tight maritime and marine theme and a location that puts you within steps of the water. If you only have time for one full interpretive stop, Bear Valley covers more ground; if you are already driving out to Drakes Beach, this is the natural companion.

Park in the free lot, which also accommodates buses and RVs, then do the center first for context and the beach second. Picnic tables sit near the visitor center and on the north side of the parking lot, and the surrounding complex has flush and accessible restrooms, drinking water, an outdoor shower, and trash receptacles. The adjacent association bookstore sells park and ocean themed books, guides, maps, postcards, coffee, and packaged snacks.

Honest drawbacksIt is one modest room, not a large museum, and it will not fill an afternoon.

It is one modest room, not a large museum, and it will not fill an afternoon. Anyone expecting live animals or a deep dive into the whole seashore will find it thin. The setting and the whale skeleton are what make the stop worthwhile, so treat it as a short, scenic add on rather than a destination in itself.

Practical tipsBest used as a rainy day option, or as a warm up before walking the beach.
  • Best used as a rainy day option, or as a warm up before walking the beach.
  • The entrance, parking, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible.
  • Bring layers and a windbreaker; the building sits directly behind the sand and cliffs at Drakes Beach.
  • Do the center and the beach as one combined stop rather than two separate trips.
