Sky Trailhead and Mount Wittenberg

Overview

About Sky Campground

Why stop

  • Sweeping coastal views in clear weather
  • Wilderness hikes near camp

Heads up

  • Gear and food require an uphill haul
  • No reliable cell or internet service
This is a primitive hike-in, bike-in, and horse-in camp on the western flank of Mount Wittenberg at about 1,025 feet, high enough that in clear weather you get sweeping views over Point Reyes, Drakes Bay, and the Pacific. It is a short enough trip that you can leave the trailhead in the afternoon and still be set up before dark, but far enough from the road to feel like real backcountry, with miles of wilderness trails fanning out from camp.

Before you go

Best time to go

The campground is open year-round, and the payoff is best on clear, settled days when the marine layer lifts; the same view can vanish entirely into fog. The climb from either trailhead means hauling gear and water uphill, and there is no reliable cell or internet service at camp, so sort out logistics before you leave the trailhead. If you want a drive-up site, showers, or someone on site to ask questions, this is not that kind of campground.

Getting there

  • Easiest approach: about 1.4 miles of moderate uphill from Sky Trailhead on Limantour Road, on foot or by bike.
  • Longer approach: about 2.7 miles from Bear Valley Trailhead via the Mt. Wittenberg or Meadow trails, with a noticeably steeper climb.
  • No vehicle access. You cannot reach camp by car, RV, or boat, so everything you sleep in and eat comes up on your back, bike, or horse.

Sites sit in open grassy and brushy terrain with coastal views where the vegetation and terrain open up. Most sites are reasonably well separated, though a few have less privacy than others. Expect a simple setup: a flat tent spot, a picnic table, and a food locker. Raccoons, foxes, and skunks here are plentiful and bold, so treat every crumb as their business.

  • Each regular site has a picnic table and a food-storage locker; the group site has two of each.
  • Potable water is available, and centrally located vault toilets are open year-round.

Pack a gas camp stove, since wood, charcoal, and other solid-fuel fires are not allowed at the campground. Bring layers and a wind-worthy shelter: coastal cloud, fog, wind, and fast-changing weather are all part of the deal here, and clear-weather views are never guaranteed. Add a headlamp, containers for hauling water around camp, and a plan for storing every scented item, including toiletries, in the locker.

  • Camp only in designated sites.
  • Store all food and scented items in the lockers, and do not feed wildlife.
  • No pets and no drones.
  • Glass containers are prohibited within 50 feet of the beach.
  • Quiet hours run from sundown to sunrise, departure is by noon, and you leave the site clean under Leave No Trace practice.
