Overview

About Morgan Horse Ranch

Why stop

  • A working horse program makes park history tangible

Heads up

  • A compact stop with limited activities beyond the ranch visit
A short uphill walk from Bear Valley puts you at a small working horse ranch that still supports real park operations. If you like horses, history, or a low-effort detour with kids, it is worth the walk up.

Before you go

Best time to go

Staff or volunteers are typically present during daytime hours, and that is when the visit is best, since someone may be around to explain the horses' work. Staffing and hours can change, so check current information before you count on a person being there. Otherwise, the exhibits and grounds carry the visit on their own in daylight.

Getting there from Bear Valley

  • The ranch sits west of the Bear Valley Trailhead parking lot, on a small hill southwest of the Bear Valley Visitor Center
  • Walk up the maintenance road that starts near the southeastern end of the Bear Valley parking lot
  • It is a short service road climb, not a trail hike, and easy to combine with a visitor center stop

More about Morgan Horse Ranch

What you'll seeRed ranch buildings, stables, and fenced paddocks on a small hill above the valley
  • Red ranch buildings, stables, and fenced paddocks on a small hill above the valley
  • Interpretive exhibits in and around the buildings covering the Morgan horse breed, ranch history, and how horses are trained
  • A tactile exhibit, plus a picnic table, trash and recycling receptacles
  • Horses may be visible in the paddocks or out working, so sightings are luck of the draw
The park-service storyThe ranch was dedicated in 1970, created with help from the Northern California Morgan Horse…

The ranch was dedicated in 1970, created with help from the Northern California Morgan Horse Association as both an interpretive site and a breeding and training facility for National Park Service patrol horses. At its height it cared for roughly 35 to 40 horses. The breeding program was phased out in the late 1990s as the need for new horses fell off, but Point Reyes still keeps a small herd of working horses.

Those horses are not decorative. They carry rangers on mounted patrols, help with search and rescue, support trail stewardship, beach cleanups, and wildlife monitoring, and haul tools into places where vehicles and mechanized equipment do not belong.

Visitors with a disability parking placard or plate may drive the maintenance road to a small parking area near the stables. The exhibit areas are accessible, and there is cellular signal at the site.

Honest limits and safetyThis is a compact stop, not a destination with a big program of activities
  • This is a compact stop, not a destination with a big program of activities
  • Horse contact is never guaranteed; the working herd is small and often out elsewhere
  • For everyone's safety, do not enter the corrals and do not feed the horses at the fence line
