Garie Beach and Its Surf Lifesavers“Garie Beach is coming up, a long sweep of sand beneath green headlands. I'd stop for a picnic and a shoreline walk, rather than count on a gentle swim: the exposed surf has strong rips, and patrols are seasonal.”

Trail guide
The Garie Beach section of The Coast Track is an out-and-back coastal hike to the Eagle Rock and Curracurrong Falls viewpoint. Published guides put the return walk at about 7.7 to 8 km; the connected mapped corridor to the nearest on-track viewpoint measures about 8.6 km (5.3 miles) return. Plan for the longer figure and allow about 3 to 3.5 hours. This is a Grade 4 outing with a steep climb from the beach, exposed headland walking, and about 425 m of cumulative ascent in one route profile. It suits a fit walker who wants a substantial coastal half-day; if you want an easy beach stroll, turn back after the first climb rather than committing to the full return.
Start at Garie Beach Carpark and head north on The Coast Track. The first stretch includes soft sand before the trail gains roughly 113 m up Garie Head. It is a sharp start, but you get a broad look back along Garie Beach and the coast as you climb. The route keeps rising and dropping over headlands instead of settling into a flat shore walk. Save energy for the way back, since this itinerary retraces the same corridor.
The path alternates between boardwalk, steps, paved track, firmer ground and short sandy stretches. Sections of raised boardwalk cross open coastal heath, with the ocean often in view and little shade to break up the climbing. It can feel hot in clear weather. Look south when the views open; on a clear day the cliffs and beaches stretch toward Wollongong. Expect repeated short climbs as you continue north toward Curracurrong rather than one long ascent followed by an easy finish.
The far end brings you to Curracurrong Creek and the coastal falls near Eagle Rock. The creek crossing has no permanent stepping stones; it may be simple in ordinary conditions but can be harder after heavy rain. The falls drop from sandstone cliffs straight into the sea, and strong wind can blow spray back up the cliff as mist. Eagle Rock is a large sandstone overhang; from the southern approach its profile looks like an eagle’s head. Look back from that angle to frame the rock with the falls and ocean. Keep to the formed track and well back from the cliff edge rather than stepping onto the overhang for a closer photograph.
This section crosses coastal heath above Hawkesbury Sandstone cliffs. Seasonal wildflowers brighten the heath, while May through October is the best window to watch for migrating humpback whales from the lookouts; sightings are possible, not guaranteed. Wind and surf have shaped the overhang and cliff line, and the rock’s outline changes with your viewing angle. The falls are stronger after rain, so the same landmark can look quite different from one visit to another.
Garie Beach Carpark is reached via Garie Road off Sir Bertram Stevens Drive. Weekend parking can fill, so arrive early; park entry fees apply. Start with drinking water, as the park advises bringing your own. Dogs and other pets are not allowed in the park, except certified assistance animals. If the full distance is more than you want, shorter Coast Track sections can start at Garie: walk as far as suits you, then return the same way. This is an out-and-back, not a loop.
