Governor Game Lookout

Governor Game Lookout is a roadside viewpoint on Garie Road above the Era coast in the southern part of Royal National Park. It looks across green headlands to the open ocean and down toward North Era. This is a quick break on the drive to Garie Beach, not a long walk or a destination that needs a separate outing.

Visitors describe two viewing spots along the road, with views toward the beaches and North Era below. The outlook is broad rather than dramatic from every angle, so it works best as an easy pause while exploring the southern park. For a photo, use a wide horizontal frame: the headlands in front give the sweep of ocean some depth.

Spring is a good time to notice the heathland: boronia, hakea and tall gymea lilies flower around the lookout. Crimson rosellas, lorikeets and yellow-tailed cockatoos are often seen in the surrounding bush. During the winter whale migration, roughly June to August, scan the water from the cliffs for whales passing along the coast.

A newspaper report records the lookout’s opening in February 1932 and says it was named for Governor Game’s affection for the bush, birds and the National Park. That makes this more than a convenient pull-off: it is part of the early story of how people came to value the park’s coastal landscape.
