Garie Beach and Its Surf Lifesavers“Garie Beach is coming up, a long sweep of sand beneath green headlands. I'd stop for a picnic and a shoreline walk, rather than count on a gentle swim: the exposed surf has strong rips, and patrols are seasonal.”

Trail guide
Garie Beach to Helensburgh via The Burgh Track is a 10.2 km (6.4 mi) one-way walk from Garie Beach Carpark to Helensburgh Railway Station. It leaves the open coast, crosses Burgh Ridge, then follows forest tracks and paths into town. Allow about 4½ hours; this is a hard Grade 4 hike with roughly 510 m of climbing. Plan your transport from the station before setting out.
Follow the shore past the Little Garie cabins and hall, then climb steep timber erosion steps to a ridge with broad coastal views. The track descends to North Era after the lookout. In the May–October humpback migration season, scan the water from the exposed coast.
From North Era, pass the beachside cabins and take the inland branch at the rough-track fork. The route climbs through tall grass to Burgh Ridge, then enters dense forest and reaches the open Garrawarra Farm area. This stretch trades the ocean outlook for a long bush traverse.
Past Garrawarra Farm, a small creek comes before a broader management track through scrub. Scattered wooden steps descend to Lady Wakehurst Drive. Across the road, a narrow footpath follows a Hacking River tributary to a second creek crossing, where large boulders act as stepping stones. The route then follows old management tracks and Hacking River Firetrail before a rugged, steep climb to a fenced clearing marked with a park sign. Follow the clearing edge for nearly 500 m to Halls Road.
From Halls Road, footpaths and local streets lead through Helensburgh to the railway station. The mapped line uses the direct connected pedestrian paths from Gardiner Place toward Wilsons Creek Road. You finish several kilometres from the start, so this is not a loop and there is no return walk built into the distance.
There are toilets at Garie Beach, but no drinking water along the coastal walking-track section; water at Garie is unpotable. Carry enough for the full walk because no reliable refill point was established along the inland finish. Vehicle entry fees apply, and the Garie car park is for day use and locked overnight. Pets are not permitted in the park except certified assistance animals.
