Mica Mountain

Mica Mountain is the 8,666-foot high point of the Rincon Mountains, deep in Saguaro's roadless Rincon District. It is not a quick summit stop: the Douglas Spring approach is about 13.5 miles one way, and Tanque Verde Ridge is about 15.5 miles one way. This is for hikers looking for a demanding high-country outing, not an easy viewpoint.

The climb crosses a sharp change in landscape: desert scrub gives way to grassland and oak woodland, then pine and mixed-conifer forest. Near the summit, ponderosa pine and spruce grow above the cactus flats. That transition is a big part of the payoff; the top feels a long way from the Sonoran low desert.

Mica's summit is forested, but a pale granite opening looks across pine-covered slopes toward distant mountains. For a summit photo, use the rock as foreground and keep some trees in the frame to show the high-country setting. On the Douglas Spring approach, Spud Rock is a nearby detour with a broader view.

The Rincons are an eroded metamorphic core complex. About 20–30 million years ago, a huge slab of upper rock shifted northwest, exposing deeply deformed rock beneath it. Later movement along faults helped form the basins around the range.

The routes make roughly 27 miles round-trip from Douglas Spring or 31 miles from Tanque Verde Ridge if you return the same way. High-country weather can change without warning, and natural water is seasonal and scarce. Carry at least a gallon per person per day and treat surface water. Overnight camping requires a backcountry permit, and pets aren't allowed in the wilderness.
