More about Manning Cabin

What the cabin isManning Cabin is Levi H.

Manning Cabin is Levi H. Manning’s 1905 log summer home near Manning Camp in Saguaro’s Rincon Mountains. It’s a backcountry historic stop that makes the most sense if you’re already hiking into the high country. The cabin is closed to public entry, so there’s no interior tour or bed inside. The adjacent Manning Camp is a separate six-site campground that requires a reservation and permit.

Plan for the hikeThere’s no road to the cabin.

There’s no road to the cabin. Approaches to Manning Camp vary by trailhead and are long, steep high-country hikes; published route figures span roughly 7.5 to 18 miles and 5,500 to 6,500 feet of climbing, so confirm the route you choose before setting out. Happy Valley Road toward the Turkey Creek trailhead can have seasonal stream crossings, and high-clearance or four-wheel drive is recommended. Check current road and trail conditions before you head up.

A summer home with a pianoManning claimed a 160-acre homestead in the Rincons in 1904 and built this cabin the next year…

Manning claimed a 160-acre homestead in the Rincons in 1904 and built this cabin the next year as a family retreat. An 11-mile wagon road was cut to the site, and building materials came up by wagon and packhorse. A piano made the trip too. The original rooms included a living room with a fireplace, a kitchen, two bedrooms, and two small bunk rooms. Manning later served as Tucson’s mayor from 1905 to 1907.

From family retreat to ranger stationManning’s family used the cabin only from 1905 to 1907.

Manning’s family used the cabin only from 1905 to 1907. The Forest Service repaired it in 1922 for fire-watch and trail-crew housing. Decay led to the removal of its central section; a connecting walkway was rebuilt during repairs in 1943. Fire personnel, biological researchers, and backcountry rangers used the structures later. The cabin joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The high-country settingThe cabin sits near Manning Camp’s spring in ponderosa pine forest at roughly 7,920 feet.

The cabin sits near Manning Camp’s spring in ponderosa pine forest at roughly 7,920 feet. This is a cooler, forested side of Saguaro: the camp is commonly 15 to 20 degrees cooler than Tucson, and nights often stay below 40 degrees until late May. Treat all surface water, and don’t use the cabin tap; it isn’t public. From the public path, frame the whole cabin with the pines around it. The forested setting is as much a part of the visit as the log walls.
