Hiking North Slope Trail

A high-country trail linkNorth Slope Trail is a 2.

North Slope Trail is a 2.2-mile one-way route from Italian Spring to the Cowhead Saddle Trail junction. It crosses a rocky, forested slope around 8,000 feet. Think of it as one section of a longer Rincon wilderness traverse, not a loop or a standalone park stroll; allow about 1½ hours for this segment, then add your approach, onward route and return.

Italian Spring is a remote access on adjacent forest land, reached from Redington Road and Forest Service Route 37. The gravel is rough and unmaintained, so high clearance is recommended; a high-clearance 4WD vehicle can drive an additional 2.6 miles to the trailhead. The park's wilderness information says the boundary is another 5.1 miles on foot from this access. The line here ends at a trail junction, not a road, so use a detailed map to confirm the full connection and return before setting out.

Expect granite slabs and rounded outcrops among pine and mixed-conifer forest, with open views across the Rincons. The north slope has burn-scarred patches, but some large trees remain. Near Italian Spring, the granite outcrops make the route's best photo stop; include foreground rock to show how the domes sit above the trees.
