Parking

From I-10 Exit 297, follow Happy Valley/Mescal Road (Forest Road 35) north to FR 4408. The lower Forest Service parking area is by large sycamores beyond a gate. The upper trailhead is beyond the rough road; NPS says its last 1.6 miles require high clearance and four-wheel drive. From the lower area, walk roughly 1.5–2 miles each way on FR 4408. The stored 9.2-mile distance starts at the upper trailhead.

Safety

The open lower slope is hot and exposed; the upper climb is steep, rocky and loose, with faint tread near confusing junctions. Water is seasonal and scarce, so carry a full supply. The last 1.6 road miles to the upper trailhead require high clearance and four-wheel drive and may be impassable after heavy rain. Dogs cannot enter the Saguaro National Park portion of the route.

Turkey Creek Trail #34 is a strenuous out-and-back from the upper Forest Road 4408 trailhead into Saguaro's Rincon high country. The mapped trail climbs about 4.6 miles each way to the Deerhead Spring junction: 9.2 miles round trip and about 6–7 hours, with roughly 2,900 feet of cumulative ascent. It is a remote wilderness climb through changing desert and mountain vegetation, with rocky footing and little reliable water.

The distance starts at the upper trailheadThe 9.

The 9.2 miles begin at the small upper trailhead at the end of FR 4408; the rough access road is not included. NPS says the final 1.6 road miles require high clearance and four-wheel drive. If you park by the large sycamores at the lower Forest Service area, expect to walk about 1.5–2 miles each way on the rough road before reaching the trailhead, adding roughly 3–4 miles to your day.

The lower route crosses open grassland and Sonoran scrub, where saguaros and juniper frame intermittent views toward Rincon Peak. After entering the park, the grade steepens over loose rock and gravel. Higher up, the trail reaches a cooler, wooded slope and the views widen toward the Santa Catalina Mountains to the north and Rincon Peak to the south.

Stop at the Deerhead Spring junctionThe stored route ends where Turkey Creek Trail meets Deerhead Spring Trail.

The stored route ends where Turkey Creek Trail meets Deerhead Spring Trail. Several high-country routes branch nearby toward Switchback, Bonita and Mica Mountain, so this is a place to follow your map rather than whichever tread looks strongest. Metal blazes are uneven, and the upper trail can be faint or overgrown. The longer USFS route to Manning Camp continues well beyond this junction and is not part of the 9.2-mile figure here.

Carry all the water you need; wilderness sources are seasonal and scarce, and the lower Forest Service parking area has no potable water or restrooms. Rain can make the rough FR 4408 approach impassable. Dogs may use the Forest Service portion but cannot enter the park, so pets cannot accompany the full route.
