Cam-Boh Trail

Overview

A gentle Sonoran Desert walk with classic cactus country vibes, Cam-Boh is an easy out-and-back that most hikers finish in about 1 hour 40 minutes. Expect roughly 5.0 miles total (out and back) with about 232 feet of gradual gain. It’s not flashy, but it’s a pleasant, low-effort sampler of Saguaro West—ideal when you want time among towering saguaro without a big climb.

Route and feel

The first ~1.5 miles follow a sandy wash, which can feel like a slow, calf-burning slog even though the grade is easy. After that, the tread firms up into typical desert singletrack with occasional rocky patches. The turnaround is the Cam-Boh Picnic Area, a welcome oasis with shade ramadas, picnic tables, grills, and restrooms—perfect for a snack break before heading back.

Views and what to look for

You’ll snag broad views of Panther Peak to the north and the Santa Catalina Mountains to the east. Along the way, keep an eye out for classic desert flora—saguaro forests punctuated by prickly pear and cholla. Wildlife you may encounter includes coyote, Gambel’s quail, and desert tortoise. It’s usually not crowded, so you’ll often have stretches of quiet trail—except for the traffic noise.

The catch

A road runs near long portions of this route, and the traffic noise is real. If that’s a deal-breaker for you, consider other hikes deeper into the park. Also, shared use is common here—equestrians frequent the trail—so be ready to yield and step aside.

Tips and logistics

• Footing: The sandy wash early on tires some hikers more than expected; sturdy shoes help in the rockier bits after.
• Facilities: Restrooms, shade, and tables at Cam-Boh Picnic Area (the turnaround).
• Parking: Start from Cam-Boh Picnic Area or from a small pullout on Picture Rocks Road at the trail’s east end. That roadside pullout sits on a busy horseshoe turn—use caution pulling in and out.
• Heat and season: Best October through May. Start early for cooler temps and golden light on the saguaros. Summer can be dangerously hot; carry plenty of water and sun protection. During monsoon season, be weather-aware—washes can flash flood.
• Pets: Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
• Alternatives: If you want more solitude away from roads, many hikers find the East (Rincon Mountain District) quieter.

Best time to hike

Fall through spring is prime. Early mornings offer soft light, cooler temps, and fewer people. Sunset can be gorgeous among the saguaros, but plan daylight for driving access and give yourself time to exit safely.
