Overview

A modest, quiet stop around milepost 70.5 on the west side of Skyline Drive, Eaton Hollow Overlook sits near 2,500 feet and looks generally north toward Elkton and the Shenandoah Valley. It’s a quick pullout rather than a destination overlook, best for a short pause between bigger viewpoints.

What You’ll See

Expect a limited panorama: trees and shrubs often frame the view, leaving windows out to the valley and Elkton below. On clear days, you’ll catch layered Blue Ridge contours and bits of the valley floor through the gaps.

History-in-the-View

You’re facing Elkton, home to the Miller-Kite House, which served as Stonewall Jackson’s headquarters in 1862. It’s a small historical footnote that gives the vista some context even if the view isn’t grand.

Logistics and Amenities

This is a standard paved pullout with parking for a handful of cars. There are no restrooms, tables, or services here; plan those stops elsewhere along Skyline Drive. The road can close in bad weather—check status before you go.

Photography and Tips

Because the view is north-leaning and partly filtered by vegetation, walk the length of the pullout to find the best gaps in the trees. Binoculars help pick out details of Elkton below. Some visitors like the soft light at sunrise or sunset here, though you won’t get a wide, fiery horizon shot.

• Season: Late fall through early spring offers better visibility when leaves are down; summer foliage can crowd the view.
• Time of day: Early or late in the day for gentler light and fewer cars pulling in and out.

A nearby path is used by some hikers to reach Argow Cabin, but this is not a signed trailhead—consult park maps if that’s your aim.
