Dickey Ridge Visitor Center

Dickey Ridge Visitor Center is an orientation stop on Skyline Drive at mile 4.6, near the Front Royal entrance to Shenandoah. It occupies the former Dickey Ridge Lodge on a wooded ridge. If this is your first day in the park, stop here early: get a map, ask a ranger what fits your time, and get a feel for the route before driving farther south.

Inside, you can ask a ranger for trip and trail advice, browse the book and gift store, and see an interactive topographic map and a park movie. NPS lists accessible restrooms here, with parking beside the building. The map is especially useful before a hike or a long drive; it shows how the park follows one long ridge rather than a string of disconnected stops.

The popular Fox Hollow Trail trailhead is directly across Skyline Drive. It's an easy pairing if you want a walk after getting oriented, but the trailhead is on the other side of the road, not at the visitor-center door.

The center sits near the crest, where open meadows and wooded edges frame broad views both east and west. Visitors often mention the valley views from around the building, especially near sunset. It's a pleasant change of pace from the map room, even if you're only stopping briefly.

The building opened as Dickey Ridge Lodge in 1938, built by the company that ran visitor services along Skyline Drive. That operation ended in 1956. The National Park Service took over the lodge in 1958 and turned it into the visitor center, so the stone-and-wood building is part of the story here, not just a setting for exhibits.

The lodge was one part of a 15-acre development that also included picnic grounds and a former cabin area. Civilian Conservation Corps crews built paths, parking areas, and picnic facilities in the 1930s. The picnic grounds are a separate nearby stop at mile 4.7; don't mistake them for part of the visitor center itself.
