McCormick Gap Overlook

Overview

A quick, rewarding stop near Skyline Drive’s south end, McCormick Gap Overlook (around milepost 102.5) sits at roughly 2,455 feet and opens up a broad look at the southern Shenandoah Valley. It’s one of the last/first overlooks as you enter or exit near Rockfish Gap, so it makes a perfect bookend for a Skyline Drive cruise.

What you’ll see

Expect sweeping farmland and forest rolling west toward the Valley and Ridge Appalachians, with the Blue Ridge behind you. The view faces west, so colors and contours pop in late-day light—classic sunset territory.

Wildlife

This stretch of Skyline Drive often dishes up white‑tailed deer, wild turkey, and soaring raptors. Your best odds are early and late in the day, when activity picks up across the valley and along the ridgeline.

Logistics and on‑the‑ground feel

It’s a simple paved pullout with parking and an open, unobstructed vantage. There are no restrooms, water, or picnic tables here, and the spot is exposed—expect wind and strong sun in summer. Trails run nearby along the ridge, but there isn’t much in the way of signed facilities right at the overlook.

• Early mornings are typically quiet if you want the place to yourself.
