Calf Mountain Overlook is a roadside pullout on Skyline Drive at mile 98.9, about 2,480 feet up. The west-facing view looks over Waynesboro, with the Blue Ridge beyond. Visitors especially praise sunset here, but fog, rain or haze can hide the view.
Waynesboro sits on the western side of Jarman’s Gap, one of the passages through the Blue Ridge. The town was named for General Anthony Wayne in 1794 and officially recognized by Virginia in 1801, giving the valley below a little history as well as a view.
For a photo, aim west across Waynesboro and include the ridge line beyond it; the town helps anchor the broad view. The overlook itself is the photo stop, so there is no need to look for another vantage point.
