Hiking Bear Den Mountain via Appalachian Trail

A short summit walkBear Den Mountain is a 1.

Bear Den Mountain is a 1.2-mile out-and-back from Beagle Gap, following the Appalachian Trail south and climbing about 350 feet to a summit marked by communications towers. Allow roughly 45 to 60 minutes. It is a quick, steady climb for a different angle on the Blue Ridge, rather than a destination hike with a long payoff. The small left-hand spur about 0.3 mile from the gap opens to views of Rockfish Valley and Castle Rock; that side trip is optional and is not included in the mapped 1.2-mile route.

From the gap to the towersCross Skyline Drive and follow the A.T.

Cross Skyline Drive and follow the A.T. south through the mown grass at Beagle Gap, then into a short stretch of young forest. The trail keeps climbing to the summit at about half a mile. The ground surface is natural, and the climb is short but steady. Turn around at the towers for the 1.2-mile return. If you want a longer walk, the A.T. continues along the open mountainside and enters the woods about 1.1 miles from the gap; returning from there makes a 2.2-mile outing.

The tower clearing opens several directions: look north toward Little Calf Mountain, south toward Humpback Mountain, west through a power-line cut toward the Shenandoah Valley, and east toward the Piedmont. Green-shale outcrops just beyond the communications towers make a good place to stop. A ring of old tractor seats is another odd summit feature; their origin is unclear.

The mown fields at Beagle Gap are remnants of the Royal Orchard. Local trail history says the former owners used the summit for picnics and to watch fireworks over the valley, which gives the unusual seats a bit of context without explaining who put them there.

Access and dogsStart at the small dirt parking area at Beagle Gap on Skyline Drive, milepost 99.

The A.T. leaves Shenandoah National Park after the road crossing; leashed pets are allowed on most park trails, but the rule for the off-park portion of this route was not established. Check before bringing a pet.
