Turk Mountain

Turk Mountain is a 2,981-foot summit in Shenandoah's southern district, reached by a 2.2-mile out-and-back hike to a rocky crest. Go for the summit rocks and the broad view west across the Shenandoah Valley; if you want a stop beside Skyline Drive, Turk Mountain Overlook is a different place. Plan on about 2 hours 15 minutes and 690 feet of climbing.

Start at the Turk Mountain parking area at milepost 94.1. Cross Skyline Drive, follow the Appalachian Trail south to the marked trailpost, turn right onto Turk Mountain Trail, and return the same way. The route starts in forest, then steepens during the final half mile before reaching the summit boulders. The top has only a small area among uneven rocks, so take your time and leave room for other hikers. The route is not ADA accessible. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet.

The view opens across Shenandoah Valley toward the Allegheny Front. From a stable spot among the summit rocks, include a little pale quartzite in the foreground to tie the wide valley view to the outcrop you're standing on. The classic view takes the hike; the roadside overlook with the similar name is a separate stop.

The summit and slopes hold a deep field of pale quartzite boulders and slabs. The rock began as sand along an ancient shore about 550 million years ago, then heat and pressure transformed it as the mountains rose. Its surface preserves Skolithos, narrow burrow traces made by animals living in that sand. The talus field is thought to have grown as repeated freezing and thawing loosened blocks from the slope.

The north-facing boulder fields shelter cooler conditions than the surrounding oak, hickory and pine forest. Botanists have recorded paper birch there, along with mountain laurel, blueberries, mosses, lichens and other rock-loving plants. These are easy details to miss if you turn around as soon as you reach the view.
