Parking
Graves Mill Boundary lot at the end of Route 662. The park lists space for about 12 cars and 1–2 horse trailers. The lot has filled on some busy weekends; use designated parking and do not assume the roadside is legal overflow.

Trail guide
This is a wooded, roughly 19-mile backpacking loop from Graves Mill Boundary to Rapidan Camp, across the Appalachian Trail and back by Jones Mountain and Staunton River. The park’s published itinerary lists 18.6 miles; the connected trail line now measures about 19.1 miles, so plan for roughly 19. The park splits it over three days: 8–11 miles on day one, 7.5–8 on day two, and 2.4–2.9 on the final morning. Where you camp changes those daily totals. Allow about 12.5 hours of hiking over three days, plus stops and camp setup. This is a substantial backcountry trip, not a day hike.
Start at the Graves Mill lot and follow Graves Mill Trail upstream beside the Rapidan River. Then the route spends several miles on Rapidan Fire Road before a short road approach reaches Rapidan Camp. The first valley stretch is the river’s most natural pause: the park points out fish, swimming holes and level ground suitable for camping. The fire road is a long practical connector, so expect a real mix of trail and unpaved road rather than a continuous footpath.
Rapidan Camp was Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover’s secluded presidential retreat and a setting for meetings during his presidency. The Brown House and Prime Minister’s Cabin are the historic center of the visit. Exterior panels explain how the camp worked year-round; interior exhibits are typically open in spring and fall. The route reaches the site on foot, not by vehicle. The Brown House’s stone chimney and porch make the clearest photo stop on the loop.
From the north side of camp, Mill Prong Horse Trail climbs to Mill Prong, then the route joins the Appalachian Trail and crosses the Hazeltop ridge. Turn onto Laurel Prong through mountain-laurel thickets, then take Cat Knob to Jones Mountain. This is the ridge-and-forest half of the trip, after the lower river corridor. A short spur leads to Jones Mountain Cabin; it adds about half a mile out and back and is not included in the loop distance.
Follow Jones Mountain to McDaniel Hollow, then Staunton River Trail back toward the same Graves Mill parking access. The last connection repeats roughly half a mile of the Graves Mill approach to close the loop. If you want to visit the cabin spur, account for that extra distance and time before choosing where to camp on the second night.
A backcountry camping permit is required, and the park’s campsites are generally not signed or designated. Choose a legal, pre-existing site in a permitted zone; campsite placement is part of planning this route, not a guaranteed stop. The lot is at the end of Route 662 and has space for about 12 cars; it has filled on some busy weekends, so do not count on roadside overflow. Dogs are allowed on the route when kept on a physical leash no longer than six feet.
