Overview
Philip A. Hart represented Michigan in the U.S. Senate from 1959 until his death in 1976 and was a leading advocate for creating the lakeshore. He introduced a bill in 1961; after years of debate and a smaller-boundary compromise, the park was established in 1970. The name points to the work behind protecting the beaches, forests, dune formations, and glacial features you’ll see around the park.

The Philip A. Hart Visitor Center is Sleeping Bear Dunes’ main place to get oriented, on M-72 just east of M-22 in Empire. I’d make it your first stop if you want a ranger to help turn the map into a day plan. If you already know where you’re headed, it’s still a useful quick stop for directions, a pass, water, or the restroom.
The exhibits introduce the lakeshore’s geology, plants, wildlife, history, and the people who have lived here. There’s also an auditorium with a park film and a bookstore selling books and souvenirs. It’s a compact indoor introduction rather than a museum that needs a whole afternoon.
Rangers and volunteers can help with questions, maps, and brochures before you pick a trail, beach, or drive. The center has accessible parking, exhibits and restrooms, plus drinking water and a bottle-filling station. Picnic tables make it handy to pause if you’re already passing through.
