Trail guide
Playa Grey and Mirador Isla de los Hielos is a 3.3-mile loop from the Pingo Ranger Station / Río Pingo Café. A forest approach crosses the Río Pingo bridge, reaches a long pebble shore, then bends around the small islet lookout before returning to the access. Allow about two hours. Most of the grade is gentle, but the loose beach stones slow the walk. Some visitors turn around at the lookout instead of making the small circuit.
A wide path leads through trees to the Río Pingo crossing. After the bridge, the forest opens toward Grey Lake, and the first beach view comes a short walk later. The beach itself is roughly 1.3 km (0.8 mile) of coarse, shifting pebbles. It looks walkable at a glance, but the stones roll underfoot and make this the slowest stretch.
Near the islet, the shore gets rockier before reaching an observation deck with benches. From there, Lago Grey opens toward the Paine massif and the distant glacier. Icebergs sometimes drift close to shore, though their size and presence vary. For a photo, include the curving pebble beach in the foreground with the peaks and any ice behind it; that gives the lake and ice a sense of scale.
Start at the Pingo Ranger Station / Río Pingo Café access on Y-150. A café is marked by the ranger access; parking capacity, fees, toilets and drinking water were not confirmed. Park rules require walking only in daylight on authorized trails and prohibit pets. The separate route toward Mirador Zapata requires an accredited guide, and some nearby routes are guided or restricted; ask a ranger which marked beach approach is authorized before setting out, and do not take the Zapata branch without a guide. The open shore has little shelter when Patagonia’s wind and rain pick up.
